The caring home that never turns anyone away — and how Hot Cares is helping

For more than four decades, Casa Caritas has been a haven built on faith, compassion, and purpose—offering full-time residential care to people living with profound physical and intellectual disabilities. Many residents have called this home since childhood, and no one is ever asked to leave due to financial circumstances, because Casa Caritas is not a business; it’s a calling.

Each day begins before sunrise with bathing, feeding, and medical routines, carried out by a small team of dedicated caregivers who treat every resident like family. While most residents cannot speak or move independently, they communicate joy through touch, laughter, and light—and they are each known by name, understood in their uniqueness, and loved for exactly who they are.

Running a home of this nature—without government funding—requires faith, creativity, and constant community support. Casa Caritas relies on donations, small fundraising efforts, and a modest on-site second-hand shop to bridge monthly shortfalls that cover caregiver salaries, medical supplies, food, and daily essentials.

One of the home’s most pressing, ongoing costs is adult nappies—an essential dignity item for many residents. The annual cost per person averages between R9,000 and R13,000, placing significant strain on limited resources. Today, three residents in particular need this support: a gentle woman in her forties who was left at the home as a child and has no family support; a young adult requiring complete care whose elderly parents can no longer contribute; and a long-time resident whose laughter lights up the room, though he is bedridden and fully reliant on caregivers.

Thanks to the generosity of our listeners, Hot Cares is stepping in to help. We are covering the cost of essential adult nappies for the next 12 months—up to R30,000—so Casa Caritas can redirect precious funds to food, medical supplies, hygiene items, and potentially an additional caregiver. It’s practical help that protects comfort and dignity every single day and strengthens a remarkable home that has served its community for over 40 years.
