Hot Cares helps UJ students see their studies through

October is Eye Awareness Month — a reminder that clear vision doesn’t just change how we see the world; it changes how we learn, work, and live. Across Gauteng, thousands still go without basic eye care, and many schoolchildren struggle in class simply because they’ve never been tested.

That’s why we’re shining a light on the incredible work of the University of Johannesburg’s Department of Optometry. Their students take eye care beyond campus and into the community — schools, clinics, even makeshift testing stations outdoors — to ensure no one is left behind. Through a key partnership with the African Eye Institute, screenings lead to fitted spectacles for those who need them, completing the circle of care from diagnosis to restored sight. In the past year alone, more than 4,000 people received free eye tests through 51 outreaches — from learners who can finally read the board to senior citizens who can again live more independently.

Behind this impact are determined students gaining vital, real-world experience — and facing real-world costs. Optometry is a demanding degree, and each student must secure a personal clinical kit (around R25,000) to conduct proper exams in clinics and on outreach. For many, that price tag is an obstacle to finishing their studies and serving the very communities they care about. Yet UJ’s Optometry department still achieves a 90% pass rate — proof of the talent and tenacity in this programme.

Their story touched us. Thanks to the generosity of HOT 102.7FM listeners, Hot Cares is covering the full cost of five student optometry kits — a contribution of R125,000 — so top-performing students have the tools to complete their training and keep delivering sight-saving care. Because for us, this isn’t only about education; it’s about restoring vision, unlocking potential, and strengthening community health across South Africa — one pair of eyes at a time.
