How Silverstar helped Ruan find healing through swimming
Ruan’s year has been unimaginably tough—but today, hope is back on the horizon.
In May, the 13-year-old thought he had a minor muscle ache. Within days, a severe hip infection and septicaemia set off a cascade of complications, including pneumonia, an ICU stay, multiple operations, and almost a month in hospital. He lost 10 kg and left hospital in a wheelchair. Just weeks later, tragedy struck again when his mother passed away suddenly from an embolism, leaving Ruan and his two brothers in the care of their grandparents as the family grieved and regrouped.
Before his illness, Ruan was a bright, active and talented rugby player, with a passion for sport that kept him motivated and positive. High-impact sport is no longer possible, but his doctors believe swimming is the perfect, low-impact pathway for strength, mobility and confidence as he heals—physically and emotionally. His paediatrician, Dr Aurelie Gerin from Netcare Krugersdorp, describes him as “resilient, brave and determined”, noting that swimming would be “therapeutic both physically and mentally, helping him to feel strong and stable during this vulnerable stage.”
For his grandparents—both pensioners—the past few months have been heartbreaking but also deeply inspiring. Between managing medical appointments, paying hospital bills, and supporting three young boys, they’ve done everything they can to keep Ruan’s spirits high and help him find joy again. Recently, their efforts paid off when Ruan took part in a swimming gala and proudly came home with a silver medal.
That’s when Silverstar and Hot Cares stepped in to help lighten the load. Thanks to Silverstar’s generous Pays It Forward initiative, Ruan’s swimming lessons (up to R15 000), essential medication for the year (R3 600), and outstanding hospital bills (R7 500) are all being covered—giving this brave young man the chance to rebuild his strength, one lap at a time.
“We were so touched by Ruan’s determination,” says Silverstar’s Deon Basson.
“The fact that he’s already winning medals despite everything he’s faced speaks volumes about his character. We just wanted to lift some of the pressure off his grandparents and make sure he has every chance to recover fully.”
Hot Cares would like to thank Dr Gerin for bringing Ruan’s story to us and Silverstar for once again proving that kindness and community can transform lives. From lessons in the pool to the stability of monthly meds and settled bills, every part of this support tells Ruan: you’re not alone—and your future matters.
