Hot Cares supports recovery care for children after life-changing surgery

For more than 25 years, Smile Foundation has been changing the lives of children across South Africa — helping young patients born with facial abnormalities, burn injuries and other reconstructive conditions receive the specialised surgery they need to live healthier, happier lives.

Working alongside 17 academic hospitals around the country, the foundation has helped restore confidence, function and dignity to more than 5,000 children and their families.

At the heart of that work is Smile Week — an intensive initiative where specialist surgeons, anaesthetists, nurses and support teams come together to perform multiple life-changing reconstructive surgeries within a single week.

For many children, these procedures can dramatically improve their ability to eat, speak, breathe and engage confidently with the world around them.

But while the surgeries themselves are transformative, healing does not end in the operating theatre.

Recovery and nutrition play a critical role in helping children heal safely and comfortably after surgery — especially for patients recovering from procedures involving the mouth, jaw or palate.

That’s why Hot Cares has stepped in to support the Smile Foundation with the funding of two industrial food processors to the value of R50 000. The equipment will assist medical teams during Smile Week by helping prepare appropriate meals for children recovering after surgery.

Within busy public healthcare environments where resources are often stretched, equipment like this can make a meaningful difference. Smile Week regularly sees multiple surgeries performed within a short space of time, placing pressure on hospital teams working tirelessly to care for vulnerable children.

Having reliable equipment available helps ensure children receive safe, consistent and nutritious meals during recovery — supporting both healing and dignity during an emotionally challenging time.
