A safer start for rescued greyhounds, thanks to Silverstar and Hot Cares

It’s hard to imagine the cruelty some animals endure — but it’s even harder to ignore the incredible work being done to help them heal.
At Greyhound Welfare SA in Northriding, every rescue is a story of survival. These gentle dogs, often victims of illegal hunting or neglect, arrive traumatised and broken. But thanks to the dedication of volunteers and the power of community, they’re given a chance to rest, recover, and begin again.

When the team at Hot Cares learned that the fencing at their intake kennels was dangerously damaged, we immediately reached out to our long-standing partners at Silverstar. What happened next was a heartwarming example of compassion in action.

Greyhound Welfare SA recently issued an urgent appeal for help. Their holding kennels — essential for taking in new rescues — had fencing that was thin, damaged, and unsafe. Without secure boundaries, the safety of the animals was at serious risk. These enclosures play a vital role in each dog’s journey, offering a safe space where they can start the process of healing and rehabilitation.

Silverstar didn’t hesitate. Moved by the organisation’s commitment to protecting vulnerable greyhounds and giving them a second chance, they stepped forward to fund the repairs.

Nadia Goodridge from Silverstar said, “The tireless work done by Greyhound Welfare SA to give abused and neglected dogs a second chance really resonated with us. It was impossible not to get involved.”

Together with Hot Cares and Hot 1027, Silverstar will be covering the cost of the new fencing – up to the value of R25,000 – ensuring these beautiful animals are kept safe, secure, and cared for as they prepare for adoption.
