From love to light: Hot Cares powers up Barkston Place


For nearly two decades, Barkston Place has quietly changed lives in Blairgowrie, Randburg—first as a sanctuary for children orphaned by the AIDS pandemic, and now as a home for adults with special needs. Founded in 2005 by Mark and Sue Knocker, this non-profit has provided not just shelter but a family—offering structure, dignity, and unwavering care to some of our most vulnerable citizens.

Without ever seeking government support, Mark and Sue opened their hearts and home—legally adopting the first children in their care and ensuring they received quality education and emotional support. Many of those children are now thriving as independent adults across the globe. Today, Barkston Place continues that mission with five adult residents, two of whom will remain in lifelong care.

But like many South Africans, the home has been hit hard by load shedding and rising costs. The ability to provide consistent hot water is essential—not a luxury—particularly in a care setting. That’s why, this Youth Month, Hot Cares is stepping in to support a home that has quietly done so much for others.

Thanks to our generous listeners, Hot Cares is covering the full cost—up to R40,000—to install solar-powered geysers at Barkston Place. This upgrade means uninterrupted hot water and lower electricity bills, freeing up funds for education, nutrition, and care.
