Hot Cares backs the K9 unit on the frontline of wildlife protection in KNP
In January 2026, after devastating floods tore through parts of the Kruger National Park, some of South Africa’s most important frontline defenders were suddenly left vulnerable. Some of the highly trained dogs of the SANParks K9 Anti-Poaching Unit needed to be evacuated to safety — but their kennels, runs and essential equipment were badly damaged or destroyed.
For more than a decade, these K9s have been central to protecting South Africa’s wildlife. Since the unit began in 2012, it has grown from just three dogs to more than 60 working across national parks countrywide. Today, an extraordinary 95% of poaching-related arrests involve K9 teams — a statistic that underlines just how vital these dogs are to conservation.
“The dogs can track scents hours old and cover up to 15 kilometres a day,” explains K9 Project Watchdog chairperson Moira Shein. “Without the right gear, their safety, health and effectiveness are immediately compromised.”
That’s where Hot Cares stepped in.
We’re providing up to R100 000 to help replace essential operational equipment lost in the floods — including hound sleepers, harnesses, leashes, food and water bowls, and other critical gear. It’s practical support with an immediate impact: restoring comfort, mobility and protection for dogs who spend their days protecting something far bigger than themselves.

“These dogs are not just tools — they’re partners. When they’re properly equipped, they can do what they’re trained to do best: protect wildlife and support their handlers in extremely dangerous conditions.”
Months after the floods, the impact of that damage is still being felt. But thanks to listener support and donor generosity, Hot Cares is helping ensure these remarkable animals can continue safeguarding South Africa’s natural heritage.
Because when it comes to conservation, protection isn’t abstract — it’s boots on the ground, paws in the bush, and care that lasts long after the crisis fades.
