Hot Cares helps protect a vital hub for disabled adults in Krugersdorp

At Hot Cares, we believe dignity starts with the everyday — a warm meal, a safe space, meaningful activity, and people who truly care. That’s what WRAPD (the West Rand Association for Persons with Disabilities) has offered for nearly eight decades, serving families across Roodepoort, Mogale City, Randfontein and surrounding communities. Born in 1947 in response to a polio epidemic, WRAPD has grown into a network of practical support: residential care, social work services, transport, assistive devices, awareness campaigns, and daily programmes that restore confidence and connection.

At the heart of that work is the Sophia Oosthuizen Protective Work Centre — a day facility for 65 multi‑disabled adults, including residents from WRAPD’s Roy Martin Residential Facility. Here, adults who can’t access the formal labour market find routine, purpose and community through simple contract work, craft sessions, training, social activities and weekly sport — supported by transport that’s costly but essential.

But this lifeline is under strain. The centre urgently needs repairs and refurbishment to remain safe, accessible and fit for purpose. Without that, there’s real risk to physical safety and to the sense of confidence and belonging the programme builds every day.

Investing in the space isn’t just about bricks and mortar; it’s about protecting the progress of people who are so often overlooked — and equipping dedicated staff to deliver care with dignity and impact.

Hot Cares recently welcomed WRAPD’s director, Sydney Mabaso, to studio to share more about the centre’s work and where help is needed most. As a community, we can ensure this vital space continues to offer safety, purpose and hope to the people it serves — today and for years to come.
