Community support powers a vital hostel for St Vincent School’s grade 12s

At the heart of every meaningful learning environment is organisation – especially in a space where every resource matters. That’s the daily reality at Tjokkertjies for Jesus Pre-Primary School, an initiative of The Cradle of Hope, which cares for vulnerable children in the community.

Founded by Melodie van Brakel, The Cradle of Hope is an independent organisation that uplifts women and children in need, providing safe housing, nutritious meals, medical care, skills training, and much more – all with a mission of dignity, compassion, and empowerment.

Their school, Tjokkertjies, has been a sanctuary of learning since 2011. With no government funding and few parents able to afford school fees, the dedicated team ensures that children receive a safe, stimulating environment, complete with free transport, a healthy breakfast, and a hot lunch every day.

Recently, the school made a humble appeal for something that might seem small – plastic storage containers to help preserve and organise their valuable educational materials. For the children who attend Tjokkertjies, these resources are everything – they spark imagination, encourage creativity, and form the foundation of learning.

That’s where Hot Cares and Silverstar stepped in.

When Deon Basson and the Silverstar team heard the school’s story, they were inspired to help. Together with Hot Cares, they donated classroom storage containers and brand-new equipment valued at R10 000 – ensuring that the tools of learning are kept safe and accessible for every child.

But their support didn’t stop there.

After learning about The Cradle of Hope’s beautiful Hope Filled Handbag campaign – which collects hygiene products for the women and girls staying in their safe home – Silverstar and Hot Cares added another R10 000 worth of toiletries and essentials to their donation, helping to restore dignity and comfort to those rebuilding their lives.

This partnership is a powerful reminder of how small acts of kindness – when filled with intention and heart – can change lives.
