The desperate stories to come out of the past 18 months are into the thousands, with the effects of Covid-19 placing even more strain on families who may have been struggling even before the first hard lockdown.

But, some families have been hit harder than most, such as the family of Jánalke de Beer’s work
colleague Jeraton.

She tells the story of their house burning down in Alexandra, with his wife Vanessa and son Aiden,
who is only 11 months old, narrowly escaping harm.

“They lost everything,” said Jánalke, “and the only thing they managed to save was their

The employees at the company that Jánalke works for all pulled together and donated a host of essential items, such as a bed, clothes, toiletries, nappies, food and anything else they could manage, but the bigger things such as a bed for Aiden, couches, and cupboards were beyond them and couldn’t be replaced.

“I was thinking of it this morning whilst I was cooking breakfast and opening my cupboard to take clothes out,” said Jánalke. “Where are they cooking, where are they sleeping, where do they keep their clothes, where are they brushing their teeth? I knew I had to try and help them, somehow, and that’s why I got in touch with Hot Cares.”

Jeraton and his family have managed to rebuild the structure of their house, but they have nothing to put inside it.

“My heart breaks just thinking of them in such dire need,” said Jánalke. “Jeraton and Vanessa are
just the nicest, most humble and thankful people you will ever meet, and I want to do whatever it
takes to help them. Jeraton will always look for me in the morning and come say hi and ask how my kids are. His concern for his fellow colleagues when they are unwell is also incredible.”

Jánalke went on to ask if there was “maybe an angel out there who could help this family?”
This story touched our hearts here at Hot Cares and we want to do whatever we can to help Jeraton and his family. With this in mind, Hot Cares will be replacing furniture items to the value of R10 000.

Easylife Kitchens Northriding has also come on board, generously offering the family a new kitchen including installation!
