Hot Cares strengthens Vaalpets’ mission to protect vulnerable animals

For the team at Vaalpets Rescue Centre, rescue is only the beginning.

Every day, the non-profit organisation cares for around 200 dogs at its shelter outside Vanderbijlpark, while also supporting animals and pet owners in communities including Bophelong, Sharpeville, and Sebokeng.

But the work goes far beyond providing food and shelter.

Vaalpets has built its mission around long-term change — from sterilisation drives and township outreach programmes to education around responsible pet ownership. The organisation believes that helping animals also means empowering the people who care for them.

Now, that mission is getting a meaningful boost thanks to support from Hot Cares.

Hot Cares will contribute up to R21 000 towards fencing improvements at the shelter, helping create safer spaces for rescued animals. A further R15 000 will support Vaalpets’ blanket and cushion-making initiative — a sustainability project where blankets and cushions are handmade at the shelter for daily use and outreach work.

In addition, R15 000 will be paid directly into the organisation’s veterinary account to assist with products needed for outreach programmes, while another R10 000 will go towards trees and grass to improve the shelter environment.

“Supporting them is an investment in solving the problem, not just managing it,” the Hot Cares team noted in motivation for the donation.

The shelter’s work is both immediate and deeply practical. New rescues are vaccinated, dewormed, sterilised, and treated for injuries, while ongoing outreach clinics help prevent neglect and overpopulation before it starts.

What makes Vaalpets stand out is its determination to create sustainable solutions. From a pet hotel that helps generate income to sewing initiatives that produce blankets, cushions, collars, and leashes, the organisation is constantly looking for ways to become more self-sufficient while continuing to serve vulnerable animals and communities.

It’s this combination of compassion, action, and long-term vision that inspired Hot Cares to step in.

Because sometimes, changing the future starts with something as simple as a safer fence, a warm blanket, or a tree that offers shade on a hot day.
