Strength in the struggle: A mother's battle with MND

Hot Cares recently had the honour of meeting an extraordinary woman named Lesego Monnakgotla – a devoted mother who, despite facing an aggressive and terminal illness, continues to show unwavering strength and grace. Diagnosed with Motor Neuron Disease (MND), Lesego’s condition has advanced quickly, robbing her of her independence and leaving her reliant on full-time care.

She lives with her elderly mother, who herself battles chronic illness, and her 15-year-old daughter, Maia. The emotional and financial toll on this small family has been immense – from selling their home to cover medical expenses to navigating the daily challenges of a degenerative disease.

When we heard Lesego’s story, we knew we had to act. Hot Cares is honoured to provide a hospital bed (up to R25,000) and a hoist (up to R20,000) to ensure Lesego is as comfortable as possible. Understanding the emotional strain on Maia, we are also covering online counselling sessions valued at up to R10,000 – helping her cope as she supports her mom through this journey.

Moreover, we will fund a caregiver for the next three months (valued at R20,000), offering the family much-needed relief and consistent support.

Lesego’s bravery, the unwavering love from her mother, and Maia’s quiet strength are reminders of the resilience that exists within families even during their darkest times. We hope that our contribution brings a sense of dignity, peace, and hope to Lesego’s world – and lets this family know they are not alone.
